In the Canary Islands we look after you from our head office on the Costa Blanca – by phone, video and email, with policies from all the major Spanish insurers. No local office, but a dedicated English-speaking contact who knows island law and handles claims in English.
The Canaries are a special case within Spain for customs and tax purposes (IGIC instead of IVA), and the insurance market has some peculiarities of its own too: buildings policies account for volcanic and earthquake risk, motor tariffs are priced around the trade winds, salt spray and a different level of repair costs, and for holiday properties there are specific rules on letting to tourists. Many standard comparison calculators from mainland Spain simply do not reflect this.
The largest Canary island, with a high concentration of expats in the north (Puerto de la Cruz, La Orotava) and in the south (Costa Adeje, Los Cristianos, Playa San Juan). Typical topics: buildings insurance for terraced hillside plots, motor insurance with low annual mileage, private health insurance with access to English-speaking doctors in Puerto and the south.
Las Palmas as a major city, Mogán and Maspalomas as an expat focus. Flat insurance with a letting clause is often relevant, because many owners use their property in a mixed way.
Sparser settlement, with many detached homes in the interior. Contents cover is frequently set too low, and theft in remote areas is a concern. Wind and sand damage to façades should be factored in.
Arrecife, Playa Blanca, Puerto del Carmen. César Manrique's building rules shape how properties are assessed (white façades, flat roofs, limits on alterations). Volcanic risk is reflected in pricing.
Heightened awareness since the 2021 Cumbre Vieja eruption: volcanic damage is covered under Spanish buildings insurance through the Consorcio de Compensación de Seguros. We check that your policy pays the Consorcio levy correctly and contains no exclusions that would undermine the cover.
No – we are present with five offices on the mainland and Mallorca. In the Canaries we work remotely. This works well for most clients, because even locally the communication is largely by phone and email.
Yes, as a rule through the state-run Consorcio de Compensación de Seguros – provided your policy is correctly set up and the Consorcio levy is paid. We check this for every new policy and for existing policies you ask us to review.
For Spanish number plates, yes – the registered keeper needs a Spanish address. We help with the re-registration and setting up the policy.
Yes. Send us your current documents by email – we will assess the cover, price and terms and tell you honestly whether switching is worthwhile.
